Hi I'm new to the forum.. This is the first Explorer (95 XLT ) that I have owned and the first truck that I have ever owned as well.... I have had this truck for about 3 months now and it started to do something very weird last night.. The trucks seems to make a groaning noise when the truck is coming to a stop ... If you are pushing down the brake you can feel a vibration in the pedal as well... I am convinced that something may be wrong with the tranny or transfer case.....

I also tried to coast to a stop and it still makes the noise.. Is the truck having a hard time going back to 1st gear???? Transfer case??

One more thing I want to add is the groaning or grinding is noticeable when driving as well ( at highway speed )

Suggestions??? What can I check at home???? Any help would be great.. Thanks guys

Dave

Are you sure it's not a problem with the brakes or wheel bearings? Seems like that's more likey from what you've described so far. Time to start a process of elimination. What kind of mechanical experience do you have?

Welcome to the site.:chug:

My first thought was that I had a bad wheel bearing until the noise started and the vibration... I haven't checked the tranfer case yet but I have never owned a vehicle with a transfer case so I am un sure of what I am looking for...I do most repairs on my vehicles as I do not trust most mechanics in my area.... Plus 93.00 dollars an hour does not appeal to me...

As far as the brakes I did machine the rotors and put new pads on the front... I am going to pull the wheels off and check to make sure everything seems normal.. But the reason I don't think it is the brakes is because the truck makes the same noise if it coasts to a stop just not as loud....If the brakes are applied the noise is louder and a vibration is felt....

I am very worried that this is possibly the tranny...I hope it is something simple..
