grinding sound in 4x4

Whenever I engage my 4x4, I hear a moaning and grinding sound and it seems to lag alot when in 4 wheel drive. What could be the problem? It is a 93 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4. It has the push button four wheal drive.

You don't mention where the sound is coming from. Off the top of my head it could be

• Bad Hub(s)
• Bad Stub Axle U-Joints
• Bad Drive Shaft U-Joints
• Front Diff low on fluid
• T-Case low on fluid
