grinding sound, slipping feeling when turning steering wheel...need help

Noticed it today more than yesterday, grinding sound when turning the steering wheel, almost feels like something is slipping... anyone have any input on what it might be?

it was the four wheel drive trying to engage, had to take out front drive shaft....now i dont have 4 wheel drive...
