97 xlt 5 MANUAL SPEED
HI GUYS.

I request your help with the gearbox of my recently buyed explorer xlt 97 manual transmission. It has 82.000 Km (wich I hope be true), and when i try to engage 1st o 2nd gear, is its pretty hard, I have to make several maneouvers with the gear stick ( I dont know excatly how call it since Im a spanish spoken guy, sorry), anyway I had to press so deeply the clutch pedal several times to engage the gear, sometimes when I tried to get reverse it sounds like if I accion the gear with out pressing the clutch pedal (tisted metal). The curios thing is that some days the gears are pretty soft and smooth, but most of the days are pretty hard to engage.

I went to a oil service station and replaced the oil of the gear box, when the guy at the service station drained the old oil, he say it seems like the hidraullic liquid (the one used by the brakes), also it has a red wine color, so it looks very strange for me. He putted new oil 3/4 gallon of normal gear box oil (this oil is designed for the Susuki Samurai gear box), but I have not notice any difference, the gears are still hard, also the new oil smell very badly (like when you burn oil), so Im very dissapointed. Do I have to bring the car to the autorized service, and get down the gear box from the chasis to see whats wrong inside of it???? Wich parts should be replaced???? wich is the right quantity and of type of oil????

Than you very much

Thanks

The problem is your slave cylinder is bad, and needs to be replaced. Do a search on our site, and you will find alot of information.

Also, the fluid in the transmission SHOULD be ATF, not gear oil. Check your owner's manual.

And welcome to our site! :D

Check for hyd. leaks and dry clutch resevior first

I concur, the slave cylinder sounds like the problem, but before you remove the tranny, open the clutch fluid resevoir and remove the black funnel to check if it's dry in the bottom. If so, bleed the clutch fluid, use (DOT3 Brake Fluid) This procedure is available on this site. It takes a long time of gravity bleeding, like overnight twice sometimes kinda long to bleed it. The slave cylinder is on an angle inside the transmission, under a rubber cap along with the bleeder. You can check to see if there is fluid blown around the inside of the tranny through this inspection hole, if so, time to change the clutch and slave cylinder $880.00 at my mechanic. Try to check for leaks and bleed it first. No loss, except $3.00 of brake fluid. Good Luck. :us:

Thank kou very much, I will need to bring the car to the mechanic anyway. Your help has been very very valuable, and congatulations for the site I´m sure I made a good chose when bought the explorer.
