Hello,

I purchased a used 94 Explorer automatic 4x4 last year from a good friend of mine. When I bought it, he stated that he had it for approximately 1 year. During that time, he routinely had to add transmission fluid on occasion as the fluid would slowly leak out. I have added fluid every so often as there is apparently a small leak somewhere. However, there have been no visible leaks on the ground when I start driving in the am.

Long story short, 3 days ago and while driving on the highway, the truck did not want to shift upwards immediately. I had to let off the gas and then it would shift. No big deal right? Well this am on the way into work, the truck starts feeling a little sluggish as I go to park. Come to find out, I can back up but it jerks a lot. Also, when I now put the truck in neutral, it will not allow itself to be pushed backwards. I can still push it forwards though in neutral.

One of my coworkers said that it sounded like the back end locking up. I am leaning on a bad transmission.

My goal is to figure out the root of the problem. I know that I didn't give too many specifics, however, any assistance that can be provided is greatly appreciated.

Loss of fluid without a visible leak is most often the vacuum modulator valve. This causes fluid to be sucked up into the engine. It also slows the shift response. This is external to the transmission but is not easy to get to. While you are at it replace the low/reverse servo O ring seals. That can be done with a pan drop. They are all bad and leaking. Replacing this will increase pressure and prevent clutch wear.

Well, with no work done to the truck whatsoever, it started driving normally again. Not sure what to make of it now.
