I wanna do it when I blow up my 4.0. Thought about swapping it for a V8 out of a 99-01 Mercury Mountaineer.
I plan on getting everything, including computer and transmission. My question is has anyone done this and am I right on the motor to get?

Thanks,

mmmm if you have an '01 Sport Trac, it doesn't seem logical for the engine or tranny to be "blowing" any time soon. it either sounds like you drive it waaaay too hard or your expectations are a little far fetched.

Tomatos,,,,Tomaaaatos. I meant when and if the 4.0 ever wears out.

well wouldn't that take a while? not tryin to argue with you, b/c you will do what you want, but, i think it would make more sense to throw some performance parts on, such as intake/exhaust/chip instead of paying the money for a 5.0 and then more money to fab the bay to get it to fit.

The engine will bolt right in and plug into the current wire harness. You will need to get alot of parts from the stock explorer 5.0L V8 and may have to re-pin a few terminals, but really easy.

I did this swap on my 1999 Ranger and had it running in only a few weeks. Daily driving within 4 weeks. (Waiting on ordered parts).

That's not what I heard!

Where did you hear that? I have done this swap in my ranger. The 95-2001, explorer and 98+ Rangers are nearly identical in the front end. The only major difference is the ranger 2wd, which has coil springs. All Explorers of that time frame are common.

Check out my "homepage" for pictures of the swap.

I've heard that you need custom motor mounts and basically the whole electrical system and computer. The V8 bolts right in?

The motor mounts from the Explorer V8 will bolt right to a sport track frame. As for wiring, use the explorer V8 engine and trans harness and EEC. It ties right into the vehicle harness at the 2" x 2" black connector. You may need to re-pin a few wires, depending on the year of the V8 donor.
