Dummying the computer will work but.... it isn't the proper way to do things. True custom tuning is the proper way to do things. I believe people get too wrapped up in the dollar. I know it doesn't grow on trees. I have felt this first hand in the last three months. Diesels are just like gas burners in the fact fueling is very important. I personally wouldn't trust the engine in a diesel to a 10 cent part.
On the new computers this is even more important. For gas burners the drive by wire, trans shifts, etc are all load dependant. The MAF is what reports load to the computer (it is actually a calculated value) but nonetheless is still important. If you use the "resistor" mod load is skewed. When load is skewed the drive by wire does funky stuff, trans shifts are retarded, fueling will be off, etc. The dbw system is load and inertia based. This just plain scares me to know this stuff is out there. The computers have gotten real smart now, if the pedal position vs. throttle position vs vehicle speed don't match what is programmed then the default value of the drive by wire (dbw) is CLOSED. Please keep this in mind, it will cut down on headaches and hassles with your vehicle.
