On my 96 explorer the rear hatchback lock doesn't lock or unlock when you open unlock/lock the doors. I have to use the key on the hatchback. You can hear the power door lock whining but doesn't lock/unlock.

Do I need to replace the power lock in the hatchback and how difficult is the job?

There are 6 plastic pins or plastic rivets holding the hatchback panel. Do I pop the plastic rivets off the rear hatchback panel by forcing off the plastic rivets and buy new ones to hole the panel?

If I get the plastic pins off, I'll be able to remove the panel to look at the actuator. I can hear the actuator but it doesn't lock or unlock.

The hatchback panel is held in place by plastic pushpins. If you gently pry the pins using your hand under the plastic cover you should be able to remove most of them.

A few might break so it may be a good idea to get some extras from the dealership. If you hear the motor running, it could be a broken tailgate actuator mount. Either way a replacement actuator (lock/unlock) with handle can be had from a local junk yard for around $20.

While you are in there, check the rear wiper motor and arm. These can also break. One of the joys of having to slam the tailgate down to close.
