have a problem someone please help!

yesterday we were out in a field shooting skeets and i put my X in 4wd to get out of there and when i got out of the little bit of mud i was in I put it back in 2wd and went on but when i was pulling out of the field i turned right and it still wanted to buck like it was in 4wd so i pulled off the road and the light was off so i put it in 4wd high then clicked back to 2wd heard the little click it does when it changes over and i went on down the road didnt feel weird or anything. well I went to make the sharp turn into my driveway and it still does the same thing hear like a small poping sound and it wants to buck a little bit the only thing i can think of is it may still be in 4wd but I have no clue on how to get it out or what should i look for or what it could be besides that? someone please help. thanks

It could just be the system doing its normal thing. When you shift out of 4wd into the auto position, it is 2wd unless it senses the rear wheels slipping, then it will kick back into 4wd until it senses the rear wheels are not slipping.

I just took it to a good friend who is a mechanic and we found out its in 4wd high and wont come out it will go into 4wd low and come out but just wont come out of 4wd high. guess i'll take it to the ford place in the morning.

With it in 2wd try backing up a decent distance and then resuming forward.... my buddy's X did the same thing and we just backed up and the hubs disengaged..... my mom's F 150 does the same thing, good luck

O tried it earlier to still didnt do anything i backed up about 30 feet. should I go more? or do u know of anything else to try. thanks

Backing up shouldn't do anything for a 99. They don't have any hubs upfront to engauge/disengauge. Your shift motor is probably stuck. I wouldn't take it to Ford unless it is under warranty. I suppose the switch could be faulty. There are relays in the cargo area, but for some reason I think they are only used to shift in and out of 4 low.

Well I took it to a few places today and had them check it and one said probbably the transfer case, but all the others say the motor. and they also said it could be the switch but not likely cause it will switch to 4wd high and low but it does have a hard time going into low sometimes so i am hoping it is the motor and not a transfer case. please post some opinions please. thanks

I highly doubt it is the t case. Why don't you pull the shift motor off and see if it will manually shift? I'd assume any mecanic that wants to replace your t case will just fix/clean the motor, and throw the t case in the the cleaning tank overnight. If they replace the case, get the old one. Same for the shift motor itself. They can often be cleaned.

Ok checked the shift motor it works. took it off and it had two places u can set it 4wd low or 4wd high. damn this auto thing is annoying I think its supposed to kick into 4wd high if it detects a slip. what else can i do to get it out of 4wd?

To get it into 2wd mode you need to turn the transfer case to the 2wd position. In 4 auto the t case send a minuimal amount of power to the front axle. As the rear slips it adds power to the front axle in small increments.

Don't know about the newer models like what you have, but I remember something about the older models losing their memory on what their position is. What it boils down to is that the shift motor works, but for some reason, it would not go/return to the proper position when changed. It would move but not completely to where it was supposed to, even though it is telling you that it is in the correct position. It is kind of like the shift motor has lost it's timing.
Don't know if that is your problem, but it gives you something to look into.

'95+ don't have automatic hubs. Backing up will do nothing.

As Ira was just saying, sometimes the system forgets where it is. Disconnect your battery for 30 minutes. Resetting the computer may cause the system to reset and get out of 4Hi.

The switch between 4Auto and 4HI is completely electrical. The shift motor is not involved in it in any way. I would say its normal operation. Did you have any mud caked up in the front wheel areas? The only thing I could think of it blocked a sensor and its reading slower or something and the 4wd is trying to compensate for it.
