shut car off one day. wouldn't start next, just cranks. tried to start w/ starting fluid in breather, no kick. ruled out fuel pump. checked for spark from coil pack, no spark. got on this site (it has helped many times) and read to try the CKP sensor(crankshaft positioning sensor). Still no start or spark. Was running great before this, and cranks strong. Help! thanx!

If you have a pair of jumper cables, connect one side to the negative post on the battery, and the other to a good ground on the engine, like the bolt on the alternator bracket or starter.

If it starts, then your fix is easy, a new ground strap.

Since you have a 99 though, are you using the PATs key? Is the security light flashing?

I will try that. yes i am using a pats key and yes the security light is flashing,

Also, have you checked all the fuses?

Is it rapid flashing, or the normal blink?

Do you have another key you can try?

Also, try and slam your steering wheel down then back up, and see if it starts.

checked dash and under the hood fuses

am going out now to try the ideas given. will be back with answers and hopefully no questions!

well all the above ideas didn't work. the alarm light continues to flash while cranking the engine. I have tried both factory keys......anyone have any other ideas?

you didn't really answer the question about the "flashing speed".... is it rapidly flashing or just "normal"? (I think one indicates a "violation" while there other indicates the system sees nothing). Either way, your problem may likely be that the receiver pickup in the ignition is no longer working and not sending to the receiver or the receiver and the controller are not "talking" thru the data bus. Basically, unless your anti-theft light goes out and your key is recognized, you have will always have a "no start". You don't even have to go thru the "cranking anguish" (save your battery), just turn the key to ON, the theft light should go out eventually. Check the wiring in and around the column for breaks / pinches.

A further "cheap" test is get a non-programmed blank cut and try it and see if there is any difference in behavior... it won't start but the "visuals" should be different.

sorry about the flashing speed, never noticed to tell if fast/slow. was reading about the pats system and saw that the alarm light must stop blinking (solid on or completly off) fot the car to start. Will try your suggestion. thanx

checked my 01 explorer and the THEFT light goes solid as it starts. the 99 blinks every 2 count (1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, etc blinking on 1)

Bad coil pack??

Just a heads up, this thread was started back in 2013 and the OP hasn't been seen since 2017

That, and it was clearly a PATS issue.
