Right b/4 i but on my brake pads I took it to a shop and asked how much they would do it for. They said it would be $270 for brake pads and have the rotors turned b/c they would have to repack bearings. Now i been look and think this is BS or he thought i had a 4X4 b/c from what i seen that the rotors just slide on the lug bolts. Now is the shop right or am I? 99 explorer sport 4.0 OHV.

It was my understanding that on a 99 the 4x4 would have the slip-on pancake rotors and the 4x2 would have the hub/rotor requiring a repack.

2 or 4wd is rotor only no bearing service possible it is a sealed unit

Sorry, not on a 99, but thanks for playing...

On a 99, the 2wd has a hubbed rotor, while the 4x4 has a floating rotor or pancake rotor as already mentioned. If you have a 2wd, they will need to remove the bearings to turn or replace the rotors. That will necessitate re-packing the bearings and replacing the axle seal.

If you have a 4x4, they do not need to touch the bearings and, in fact, cannot repack them without destroying them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure when I was looking at the instructions for this a while back you have to remove the bearings and repack. Sucks I know, but that's the way it is.

sorry my bad was thinking about 02 + that and I havnt seen a 2wd 2nd gen in a long time

When I took my front rotors off to have them turned. I bought new bearings and it was pretty simple. The bearings are pretty easy to get out and so was the rear seal. The races are a tad more of a challenge but still simple. Packed them back in with some Ford Lincoln Mercury bearing grease, I forget the appropriate name for the grease.
