recently replace the locking hubs and everything worked fine until yesterday when all of the sudden...it sounded like my ex was gonna eat me with all the growling and such that was taking place in the front end. the smell from the gear oil is horrendous and i dont know what it is. i have been advised (not by a shop) to maybe look at replacing the whole front axle assembly. what is a cheaper alternative to this that could fix my issue.

sounds like your ring and pinion took a crap. i would pull it a part and see where the metal shavings that are in there are coming from. or you could have a bearing taking a ****e. either way i would disassemble and inspect

ok, thanks. i will do that myself or take it somewhere. i dont know exactly what im doing so i wont do it myself.

I got some awesome news! It wasnt the 3rd member at all. it was actually the inner wheel bearing. it was spun and the keeper or whatever you want to call it, that held all the rollers in one place had pretty much disintegrated and left metal shavings everywhere and had to be replaced. no more noise! The shop which will remain nameless, did not do their job right and check what they were supposed to and misdiagnosed the problem!
