I've just inherited a 98 Explorer Sport with either a blown head gasket or a cracked head, its running water out the tail pipe pretty bad and one of the plugs on the driver side was covered in water.
My question is, can the drivers side head be removed without having to time the engine?
I see the info on the timing chain rattle and the parts that should be replaced and to replace the timing cassette it has to be retimed but i ran this engine and didn't get any timing chain noise. I know this is a risk but in the interest of getting a running truck for me to drive I would simply fix the head issue and drive it until the timing needed repaired. My main issue with doing the timing work now is that i don't have access to the tools to time it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
