Alright this might seem like a dumb question but my knowledge of cars is small. I want to buy new headlights for my 96 explorer but I'm not sure what to buy and also are adjustments needed for better bulbs?

Well the best standard bulbs is a very controversal subject. There are new bulbs constantly coming out and they are becoming brighter and brighter. Sylvania Silverstars seem to be one of heavy favorites. Personally I am running Hella bulbs which seem to be fairly bright (check the cardomain to get a taste). If I where you, I would go to your local autopart store and ask one of the guys what the brightest bulb they carry is? For just your standard bulb, you do not need to make any modifications. However, the brightest lights you will find on the road, are H.I.D.'s. These DO take modifications to your car. You can order them online and they may get very pricey but I have heard that the cheepies from China work just as well as the expensive sets from the U.S..

I will direct you here http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178127 which is a "sticky" post at the top of this "Lighting Forum" page.
IMO good lights for a 96X would require new headlamp housings(OEM). A high power harness & Sylvania Silverstars headlight bulbs. Also an upgrade/addition of some good fog lights like Hella or PIAA or KC. Be prepaired to spend $150+ for headlights and $70+ for fogs.

Thankss. I read the sticky post but it was an older thread so I wasn't sure if the bulbs talked about were still good. I think I'm going to check out ebay

If you just want to replace the stock bulbs, Sylvania XtraVision or Philips Hi-Visibility are your best bets for more light on the road. Both are available at many auto parts stores, and even walmart has the XtraVisions and kmart has the Hi-Visibility ones.

Bulbs like the Silverstars, PIAA, and other superwhites are more cosmetic if you want a blueish light or the "HID look", but they actually put out less light from the bulb, only last a year or so, and cost a ton more.
