i had hte same problem and traced it back to switch it self the cennections waer out fast there only 20.00 new

Not sure if the Explorer does or not but the late 80's E & F models had an internal breaker in the headlight switch. They would defect and start the on-off mess by themselves.

i pulled my headlight switch out and replaced it with a new one so far so good.... my question is on the switch what does the i8 prong do? if you hold the switch with the knob at you its the prong furthest away and to the left of you in my truck its a black with red strip wire. anyone know what its for(ground, hot, etc)

Don't see a B/R wire in the schematic. I'll send you the schematic/connector/switch test and maybe you can determine from that the answer to your question.

Was wondering if you ever found the problem? My 93 ex started doing this 3 days ago, but it takes about 20 mins. of driving before they start flashing. Is it the switch or is there a relay for the headlights?
Thanks

The problem is the switch itself. They wear out/go bad over time, there is actually a defect in the factory ones and they can start a fire if they go bad and keep doing this and you don't replace them. Spend the $15-35 and buy a whole new switch. You re-use the factory pull knob and trim and all that. Well worth the price for the safety of fully-working headlights and not starting a fire. Also keeps you from getting pulled over in case your headlights go off when a cop was around.

Sounds like the heater switch on my wife's jeep. :(

Would this still be the switch because it only flashes when the high beams are on for about 20 mins. ? Tried it this morning with low beams only for over 30 mins. and it never flashed.

Thanks

It's the switch. Mine has the same symptoms. Mine doesn't do it on low beams much, or if it does, I just push the knob back in and pull it out and they work again. On high beams, once it gets really bad, they will just go out shortly after switching. I have the switch, just haven't installed it.

Replace the switch. Seriously.

OK Thanks I will give it a try. I hope to get to it this weekend.....I will let you how it turns out.
Thanks again

i bought a HL6663 headlight switch from napa(work there) put it in and havent had any problems i also put on the high temp headlight plugs as well my factories where worn out anyways
