Summit Racing has Hedman Hedders for about $207 (part number HED-89400). It says it fits Ford: 1990-94 4.0L Ranger 2WD/4WD, 1 1/2 in. primary tubes, OEM-style collectors, TEMS headers. So will it fit a 1st gen Explorer? How hard is the install? Thanks for any help.

I've heard some people on the boards say that headers are a total waste of money. I think Huskyfan23 got headers, not sure which brand, and said that they didn't make much of a difference at all. You could get different results though, who knows.

Yeah, I have heard that too, but I also heard that it depends on what mods you have done. If your truck is stock and you put headers on it you won't really notice a difference but if you have done a lot of performance mods to your truck I think it would be a good mod.

Anybody else?

Well if you look at Huskyfan's truck, he's got a lot of performance mods. Intake, exhaust, TB, MAS, chip, and headers, and he still said it didn't make a big difference. Personally, if the only performance mods you've got so far is a cat-back, I'd go with an intake, TB, or chip next.

Yeah, right now I am saving to get those things and my lift. Do you know if he put on the headers before or after most of his mods?

Ummm.....I'm not sure exactly on the order in which he did them, but if you're planning to do all those performance mods, then you'll need to get the chip last because both the MAS and the headers will need a reburn on your chip.

I am probably going to get the chip last because I don't want to be paying extra for the premium gas right now while the prices are high.

Does anyone know if those headers would work for Explorers and how hard they are to install???

well the good news is with the chip ( Apten at least )
you can run one of two programs.
92 performance
and
87 performance.
I ran 92 for just one tank and droped down to 87 and there really is not a trememdous
differnce in the two, believe it or not.
Either way prices are never going down. Not enough at least.

Oh, I didn't know that you could one that used anything other than premium. Thanks.

Come on guys. I know there has to be some of you who have put on headers!!!!! HELP ME OUT

Anybody??

I've got a set of Hedmans on my Explorer that I bought from Summit. Yes they will work...tell them your make and model, etc, and they will work fine. The install was a pain in the ass, but it wasn't the hardest thing i've ever done. All it takes is some determination, patience, and common sense. You can do it. I wrapped mine with about 50' of insulating header tape....it says a lot cooler under the hood. If you end up getting them, go down to a local speed shop and pick up a copper collector gasket for the Y pipe before you install it...the cardboard one will probably blow out after a while. It is a universal gasket...you might be able to get it at autozone. You can PM me if you have any questions about the install.. or if you want to see how they look etc etc.

I know this doesn't pertain to your question but:
Headers are as worthwhile a modification as any other...people that say they can feel more power with a throttle body or exhaust as opposed to a set of headers, or a mass air sensor as opposed to a set of headers...etc etc...are full of **** in my opinion. I have a lot of stuff on my truck and have had it for a long time. I've learned not to trust other people's opinions on what "feels like a kick in the """"seat of the pants""""". Everyone has their own crock to spiel. All dogma in my opinion. Give me a dyno sheet or i'm not listening.

I agree about the power thing different mods compared to headers. Thanks for your help man.
