97 mountaineer 5.0 AWD
hey guys, I just bought my 97 mountaineer a few months ago. Just turned 101k last week. Hoping to learn a lot about the vehicle. I used to own a 92 explorer sport that has a CAI, dual exhaust and some 15x8's w/ 30" AT's. She was fun but was getting old. My summer car is 98 cobra mustang that puts down 290/293. Ive been a member of svtperformance.com for a few years now.

Few questions.

How does the gibson catback sound on these vehicles?

How hard is it to set the front ring and pinion, because its getting a little clunky?

I have a miss idle and cant figure out whats wrong. Car has new air filter, fuel filter, autolite platinums, napa plug wires, cleaned the IAC and MAF. What gives? I dont think it has a vacuum leak, but I could be wrong. Could it be the fuel pump on its way out?

Thanks!
Grant

sure thing. being a certified tech, I should have been more specific.

When in open loop, the car idles kinda high (around 1100 to 1200 rpms) which leads me to belive I have a vacuum leak. But, when in closed loop The car idles around 600-700 rpms which is normal. With the car stopped either in traffic, or at idle in park, the car has a choppy idle. A definite miss. The CEL is not on and I dont think I have any pending codes. Im at a loss.

Like I said, IAC and MAF are both clean. New Air/fuel filter. New plugs/wires. PCV valve still rattled.

Do you have any suggestions? I thought I heard a small vacuum leak on the back of the upper intake manifold, but I sprayed sime carb cleaner back there to see if the idle changed, but nothing. Im at a loss.

Please help. While were here, any thoughts on a gibson catback? My car is otherwise stock.

Thanks again!
Grant

Is there any way to connect a scanner to it, see the fuel trims and such???
You might also clean the IAC valve--might be sticky???

The stopped at a light is a clue--check the one-way vacuum valve on the brake booster??

I have no feedback on the gibson catback--

I can only say this.
Flowmaster 50 series drones so bad, I find myself playing with gas pedal to match exhaust tone with my music!! You will need a amp and sub to hear any bass over it.

haha, Ive already got the sound system covered. I did just put in a new power booster tho. I check all the lines and there are no leaks. Could the check valve on the new booster in fact be bad?

I may be able to check fuel trims. I can go to the shop I used to work at and ask to use there snap on scan tool.

Thanks for the help. Ill try to get the fuel trims checked out and report back. I bet the fuel trims are just at the point where it will make the car run poorly, but not set of the Check engine light.

Also, the IAC valve has already been cleaned twice since I bought it.

All right. Another Mounty owner & finally a 97 as well.
