Hi there!
My name is Nick. I'm 18 and a full time college student at the University of Nevada, Reno. I finally saved up enough over the last two years to sell my Olds Cutlas and buy a '91 XLT. (My parents had a '93 and we ran it hard until it died. I can't think of buying another type of truck!) Anyways, my trucks in decent shape, only needs minor interior cosmetic detailing, and I found this website and have since then inspired myself to save up for a lift and some new tires. My main concern right now is the fact that my truck does get alot of use offroad in its stock condition, and I was a little worried about that cable holding the spare tire underneath. Should I worry about that at all with the amount of bouncing the truck does offroad?
Well, I just wanted to say hello. And after reading alot of these forums ya'll look like a bunch of really nice people. Helpful; not like alot of the holier-than-thou jerks on other forums. Sorry about the long post, but I look forward to sharing my trials and tribulations of my new explorer project. . . and hopefully keep in good enough graces with my dad to keep letting me use his garage :)
Nick

mine always held up fine. Once you go to bigger tires, it will become useless to you anyway as bigger tires won't fit under there. I carry my spare in the back of the x now.

Welcome to the site!! I have heard of a few spare tire cables breaking, but it was probobly due to a rusted cable. When I change my oil I lower and lube it. I jostle mine all around and it hangs on. It was even loose for a few weeks.

Welcome ... I'm new here ( and a Nick also ) This board is full of info, and the people here are great.

For the tire cable, bring down the tire and check the condition of the cable ... If it's frayed and rusty and just plain gnarly, it might snap one day ( throwing the spare in the woods, or worse, the highway )

A new one at ford is like $70, so post in the WTB section for a used one ( from people who have lifts or big tires and can't use the stock spare location )

That said, if you will be going to a lift and bigger hoops, and if the cable is bad, just throw it in the back 'till your 4" lift and 33's show up ...

hahaha speaking of spare tires coming off. i was in los angeles, more specifically driving on the 405. me and my buddy were just crusin in the car pool lane (tons of traffic) and there is a tire bouncin on down the freeway right towards us!!!!!!::eek: there were no wrecked cars or anyone pulled over so im guessin someones spare came loose.

we missed about by about a foot, not like i could swerve and try to miss it, with a barrier to my left and cars on my right. pretty crazy stuff.
