97 Explorer 4.0 V6 SOHC
Hello my name is Dustin. I own a 1997 Ford Explorer with the standard V6 and SOHC.

I am having problems getting my truck to run. I went to Autozone and then gentleman there told me that it was the Fuel Pressure Regulator. I purchased that and a Fuel filter in hopes that the 7 dollar part would fix it before I needed the 80 dollar part.

I was able to get my vehicle home by starting it and giving it some gas to keep the idle up. As soon as I remove my foot from the gas the RPMs will drop down to zero and the vehicle while shut off. That has led me to believe that it is not the fuel pump as it would not be getting any gas to the engine at all. At first I thought/hoped that it would simply be the fuel filter but that has been replaced and the problem still persists. The only other thought that I have would that it could possibly be the IAC or the idling is going awiry. I have yet to put the pressure regulator on because after I drove it for a bit I thought that if the pressure regulator was bad than it would have a harder time running then it has right now. My reasoning behind this is that when you get it running it runs just as well as it always does.

So the short list.

Vehicle will start with the addition of a little pressure on the gas pedal but shut off as soon as the gas pedal is released. Brand New Fuel filter on the truck. It also has gas in it haha. I have a fuel pressure regulator to install but have not done that yet and wonder if it is needed. Could it be the idling or the IAC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if I need to give more details I will do so gladly.

Thanks,

Dustin

I have not checked it yet. I didn't even think to before I released all of the pressure to change the fuel filter. I have turned the truck to on several times with out cranking it to restore the fuel pressure and then ran it for a bit to make sure my battery doesn't kill over as well.

The pressure should be between 25 and 40 psi correct?

A BIG vacuum leak could cause those symptoms. Check all your vacuum hoses.

Thank you gentlemen very much. Right now it seems that my IAC is the problem. I cleaned it out real quick and bolted it back on. I have ordered a new one and will be replacing it tomorrow and returning my fuel pressure regulator.

Welcome to this forum! For future reference, this site has threads on cleaning the IAC solenoid, and the MAF sensor. It's a good idea to clean these 2 things plus the throttle body intake periodically to help prevent problems in the future.
