Hello. I Just bought a 91 Explorer 4x4. It was listed as 68k but had 69.5k by the time I saw it. However, the condition of the seats strongly implies it is really 169.5k. But since it was only $600 & runs great, I don't care. It was listed as a mechanic's special b/c his mechanic said it lost pressure during a leak down test so it must have a blown head gasket. However, it does not overheat, there is no water in the oil, & there are no other indications of a blown gasket. I have driven it around for a week now & the drivetrain seems fine, other than a fair amount of squeaks & rattles from the body & suspension. Hopefully a trip to jiffy lube will quiet some of them. I bought it mainly for trips to Big Bear Mountain to save the car the wear & tear of winter storms on mountain roads & to save me the hassle of chaining up, especially in wet snow or rain. I was stoked to find it already had 31x10.5-15LT mud & snow tires with good tread. I will have to find some chains to fit since the law requires carrying them in the mountains but everyone locally is either sold out or doesn't have the right size. I was pleased to find this community & surprised to learn that the Explorer is such a good base for a serious off-roader & that it has such a large following. I will use the many tips here to gradually improve my Explorer. Thanks. Mike

and yeah, when i bought my 92, he told me 130k, (only showed 30k) and he said he had just replaced the alt, and air filter, which both had the date he replaced them, and 230K

i was like :0, so long story short, he got a mouthful, and i got 200$ back out of the 1100$ i paid lol

Howdy y'all!
I have a '93 sport and I would like to know what are the essential that I should equip for off-road. The truck is in pretty good shape, but I want to give it some love and show'er some of the love that she's given me.

...Goofyfoot, Welcome here neighbor...:biggthump

...You can find all kinds of local info here and the members can help you out...

...As for your chains, they are actually cheaper new, if you buy them up in Big Bear or you can always find them local on Craigslist...;)

...We go to Big Bear pretty regular around here...If you do a search for "Big Bear" you will find some threads of our play days of both summer and winter...

welcome
