Hello all:)

I have a ? about some of the problems i seem to be having with my 95 Explorer. First one is, during exceloration i here a pinging noise comeing from the the left under the hood! Stops when i give it gas.

Also on the right front side, I here what sounds like a flat tire, but there is no flat tire. Can best be heard from the front passenger side seat! The noise is a flaping type of noise, almost like a flat!

Thanks in advance:)

I'm afraid I can't help with your question (I'm not very familiar with the second-generation Explorers, and I don't know that much about the first-generation trucks). But I can welcome you to the board. WELCOME TO THE EXPLORER FORUM Good luck with getting help with your truck. I don't think you'll have any trouble getting an answer, lotsa really knowledgeable folk here.

Try putting some 89 Oct Gas, or 93 in your X see if the pinging is gone after that. You might want to have a tune up done. Change out plugs and wires stuff like that..

Hello Commocozy,

Thanks for the reply.

I just got a full service tune-up and still the same, im stumped as to what it could be? I thought for sure that would have taken care of it! Unless the mech didnt do what they said they were gonna do...

If this helps, the pinging noise gets louder when i step on the gas even harder.

As mentioned above i just spend $600 on a tune up and sensers, filters and tire rotation...

Not sure about the pinging as I havent had that yet.
However the tire noise sounds like the tire is cupped. Cupping is caused by improper balance or bad shocks or bad ball joints or a combination of them all.
In my case I had bad shocks & lower ball joints.

Hello Bill Kemp!!

I just had the tires rotated two weeks ago, as soon as i left i noticed this noise and not to mention, what sounds like alot of road noise! I didnt notice this before... I really dont know how to put it in words but here goes, seems like the tires pick up every little noise when running across the road and then i here it inside!

I have to take the X back thursday for the pinging noise and will let them know about the Tire/ road noise! I just hope what ever the problem is, is covered in the warrenty! Crossin fingers;)

Thanks

Hah

You're story sounds so much like mine (before I killed it )

I had just gotten my tires rotated... and here comes the noise!!! I have M/T's on mine so you can imagine...

anyway it sounded like a loose brake pad (since I just had my brakes checked)..... but I took it back and they told me...."well we rotated your tires" "oh ok well what about the noise then" they said "just the tread noise" then they checked it out and told me

"Well your tires need to be balanced" I was like ""uhh hello.....why didn't you guys do that when I was here? I mean I just thought that was natural...you rotate and balance right?"

They never asked me nor did I realize they didn't do it... problem solved....you can lose weights also.... so even though they balanced them check the weights (or lack there of)

As for the engine noise.....try an engine flush out and check all belts....Also...try using a higher octane gas 93 or better..

Is it a "thump thump thump" or a "thump" every time you hit a bump?

The tapping is a timing chain, jack shaft or electronic distributer. Your ECU may need some reprogramming too.

How many miles on it?

Well, its not really a thump per say! Its more like very small bumps in a row, doesnt do it all the time. Also some vibrations aswell...

I guess i will find out on Thursday?

Thanks all

Did they clean or replace the Mass Air Sensor? If the filaments are dirty, it will cause false readings to the computer and the engine will run either lean or rich (can't remember which) causing pinging noise. You can clean the MAS yourself. Instructions are on the homepage FAQ's I believe, or check out the following site. It is a great info/repair source. Dead Link Removed

Welcome to the site!

Check the headlight bulb access doors. If the latches aren't holding them down they will flap up and down when your driving down the road. This happened with mine so I screwed them down. Much quieter now!

YIKES!!! What to do now?

Took the x back for service today, pinging noise is said to be cause by the gas i use! (Mid grade) Just like ya guys told me...

Now here comes the tire problem, they told me that the reasom im hereing alot of tread noise is because the front two tires have some sort of bubles on them. So they direct me to a Goodyear dealer to get them to fix the buble problem, so i go and get one of the tech to check them out and he tells me that there is nothing wrong with my tires!!! It just needs front end alianment.

So who do i trust and what should i do???

Thanks again

DonM
