Hello all. I have a 1994 Ford Explorer Limited. about a month ago every once and a while it would run like it was out of gas. As I usually run the truck low on gas I put some gas in it and about 10 seconds after starting it the problem went away. My wife was driving the truck the other day and it stalled on her. I got there and started it up and it had a very bad misfire. I got it to drive and about a 1/4 mile down the road it straightened up. Drove home and no issues. Coming home from work 3 days ago the truck started to stumble again. Got home shut the truck off. Went out later that night and in about 10 miles the truck used 6 gallons of gas and ran horrible the entire way there and most of the way back except for about 1/2 of a mile. Shut the truck off and it has not started since. I changed the Mass Air Flow Sensor, The fuel pump, Checked the spark and still no go. I am at a loss. Anyone with some help would save my life as this is my only transportation.

Fuel pressure regulator, test it. Betting the pressure is through the roof.

truck is stuck at the shop right now will check tomorrow morning but when i did the old screwdriver in the service port test earlier there was very little pressure. Anyway will test with the gauge tomorrow

Everyone's got there ways of doing things and I could be wrong. Personally I like to learn from the mistakes of others. :p: Saw a guy lose about 2 grand on a truck because he thought spray from the fuel rail was a good enough test. Then again it's good to know people like him because you can pick things up cheap.
Your motor is drowning and that's a good indication of excessive fuel pressure.

Fuel filter and/or water in tank from condensation.

I am also going to check the filter tomorrow Thank You. As far as water goes I emptied the tank when changing the pump so that is out.

Shaggymane Sorry didn't see your post. This is true. The only reason that I actually changed the fuel pump was that My wife (who barely knows how to drive the car let alone fix it) swore that it was the fuel pump so I had that on my mind. I actually have my own opinion of what is wrong with it but I do not want to sway someone Else's opinion by saying what I think it is. First thing tomorrow morning I am going to be testing the fuel pressure regulator.

The filter will hold water.

Be careful when disconnecting the lines...don't get sprayed in your eyes !

Check for loose or disconnected vacuum lines too when you check the FPR.

I have checked vacume lines already. I dont think that will keep it from starting anyway. So just to give everyone some more detail. The truck will give a little hint of wanting to start every 30 seconds or so of me turning it over but it is not running at all right now. I am thinking that it is TPS or Cam sensor. Let me know if this sounds completely out of the question. I know that it has spark so I do not know about the cam sensor. But keep in mind that when it was running if I floored the gas it would stumble for a second and then Kick in. What this is telling me is that the truck was thinking that the gas was all the way down and flooding the motor. Then when I matched what the truck thought was the right pedal location it burned off the excess gas and then ran fine. Just a thought.

I just tested the fuel pressure. I have between 39 and 40 PSI when cranking it. I am going to test the regulator anyway and see if that it is leaking fuel through the vacuum lines. I am leaning towards the computer now.

Ok well i just tested it with a Verus Snap on scanner and it show's no codes. I am going to go get a computer. I wish that some of the people with all of the knowledge on here would help out. Maybe give me some stuff to test.

Verus Snap on scanner and it show's no codes
Just to be clear -- this means all pass codes right? No response at all from the computer could indicate a problem with the computer.

Any vacuum leaks? Have you pulled any spark plugs to check their condition? Checked the spark plug wires?

Since you have the scanner you should try a TPS sweep and see if at any point you have a dropuot or open loop. Also check the grounds for ECM. Try to see if it will start with the gas pedal to the floor, it will shut off the injectors while starting it at wide open throttle.

FPR did you do a full check of it such as build up and leak down? To me going on what you have said only it really sounds more like a flooding problem and that would be with in the delivery system with the main part of control being the FPR. Check for wet vac line ECT. Systematically trouble shoot it before throwing parts at it much cheaper that way

Ok so I got 2 computers from the junk yard. Tried both with no luck. Does anyone have any idea how to test the Coil packs? I tried to put gas right in the intake and got nothing. This has to be a spark issue. I know it is not compression as it was intermittent and the truck ran just fine when this was not happening. So my thoughts are if it is not Compression. It didnt jump timing. It is not Fuel. It must be spark. I have new Plugs and wires ordered and they are on there way tomorrow. I might get a new coil pack as well but if there is some way to test this one then I will just go and do that. I do have a Multimeter. BTW I did try to test the resistance on the TPS and it would read resistance all the way up to infinite so I am assuming that that is right as it didnt jump just went nice and smooth. This just really sucks cause it is my only transportation and I am sick as a dog but have to get it going.

I checked the Fuel pressure and it stays at a stedy 39-40PSI. I couldnt check the leak down as when I would stop cranking it for some reason the fuel would leak out from the connection to the service port. (problem with the gauge not the truck). I did check the vacuum lines at the octopus and they were all dry and I even had someone crank the truck while i had them off with no fuel leak out. I am returning the fuel pump and that is covering the cost of the plugs, wires, and coil pack.

The vac line to check is the one at the FPR also I may be wrong but I do not think putting raw gas down the intake on an injector motor will work.

For coil pack check the ohms of the towers and also the 3 points on the plug. But before any farther do you have a repair manual handy as it will help in the trouble shooting and even checking the coil pack.

Also just a thought here but did you check the relay for the fuel pump? Pull any plugs to see what they look like as in wet or other?

Upper Intake gasket, and or a bad dpfe?

Very good idea. Also I would pull the EGR to see if it's stuck or if there is a chunk of carbon holding it open, Happens alot. Spray some brake cleaner into the EGR valve with it off to see if it leaks through if so it's junk. I would not throw parts at it, check them first.
