2000 limited 2wd ford explorer. I pulled the rotor and have properly set the caliper up top to stop it from damaging the brake line. The bearings were not "blue" but I am at 130 thousand miles and felt like it was a good time to replace them.

my concern is getting the outer race out of the rotor. Before i go doing it the wrong way is their any tricks that work especially well for the diy? I don't like to use the trusty screwdriver leaving a nice big gouge and I am concerned about the reliability of DIY vs taking it in to be pressed out. No way will I use a new bearing in an old outer race either. I didn't see any step by step DIY info on the site and wondered if I had just missed it.

Any other common problems i can look into while i have it apart?

If you need a pic let me know.

Thanks

I simply use a punch and a hammer. Just be careful.

Good luck ....

Thank you.

I ended up getting them out. I froze the bearings so they slipped in easier.

Just in case what are the specs for tightening the the spindle bolt down on the bearing plate? I'm about to close it up today and realized I don't have the #'s.

Thanks

Sorru, I can't gove you a spec; I do it and have done it for years by feel ( tighten and back of a little ).

In fact I just did mine this morning.

17-24 foot-pounds

4. Install the front disc brake hub and rotor.

1 Position the front disc brake hub and rotor.
2 Install the outer front wheel bearing.
3 Install the front wheel outer bearing retainer washer.
4 Install the spindle nut.

5. Tighten the spindle nut while rotating the front disc brake hub and rotor.

6. Loosen the spindle nut. (17 lb/in)

7. Tighten the spindle nut while rotating the front disc brake hub and rotor.

8. Install the following components:

1 Install the nut retainer.
2 Install the cotter pin.
3 Install the hub grease cap.

9. Install the front disc brake caliper anchor plate.

Got it, I figured it was 18 and yes I got it.

I have to admit I left it too long and the passenger side was bad.The spindle was still good but it wouldn't have been long before it started to chatter.

Thanks again for all your help.

Incorrect... the final torque spec is 13-21 IN*lbs, not ft*lbs. HUGE difference....

it was straight from alldata, that's the torque setting for the first time you tighten it down, as it shows 17 lb/in for when you torque it back down after loosening it from the intial 17-24 lb./ft.
