help 4x4 switch on dash

I have a 97xlt with the ,auto,4x4high,4x4low switch on the dash and for some reason about two times a week it locks into 4x4high around town .
No 4x4 light come on the dash and the switch is sill in auto with the road being dry and hard .
What is making it select full time 4x4 high when the road surface is good .
I have to go to netural 4x4low and back to auto to get it out of 4x4 .

Sounds like a ABS wheel sensor is bad or intermittent telling the 4WD computer that there is wheel slippage. The ABS sensors are used for both systems (ABS and 4WD auto mode). You might check to see if any of the wheel sensors are crusted with mud or other debris causing a false signal. It could also be the 4WD computer. A 97 should still be under warranty, have Ford check it out.
