Help / Advice 92 Explorer Purchase

Hi, I am looking at buying a 92 Explorer. The only major problem is the owner told me that his mechanic told him that there was an engine seal leak. The owner says that simply keeping up with the 3000 mile oil changes is enough. The only thing I notice is the fact that I can smell burning oil when the engine is hot. I can get the truck for $500. Am I buying a major headache ready to happen, or something I can nurse for a year or so?

$500 is pretty darned cheap....that leaves $$$ in your pocket for fixing it. I would just suggest that you not plan on having this potential project be your only means of transportation. If you are mechanically inclined and enjoy working on cars/trucks I don't see it being much of a risk, but if you are expecting to pay somebody else to do the work, the repair bills can add up really quick. Just my two cents.......

I agree, 500 bucks isn't much of a risk. Do you know/have a trusty mechanic? See if the guy will let you take it to the shop to have it looked over. Like the others said, if you can do the work, this could be a fun truck with lots of potential!

The fact that you can smell it burning off when it's hot makes me think it's a valve cover gasket. The 4.0 isn't as bad for this as the 2.9, but it is heard of. Can you pin them down on what's leaking?
