Hello fellow explorers,

I had this weird sound come out of my 94 4x4 xlt. It really f**ing pissed me off. My mechanic does not know what the hell I am talking about and of course it has not done it again.

Basically, I was at a light and once it turned green I acclerated ahead. All of the sudden something started whining louder then a motor at first I thought it was a moped. If you haveever heard a motor cycle drive and then if you turn the key off and let the bike run you can hear the chain still soinning. That is sort of what it sounded like. I pulled over stopped the truck the whining continued and then whatever was spinning stopped shortly after. I continued on my way and there was no problem no sounds, no whines, nothing...

One other thing there was a slight burn smell (not heavy or consistent at all) almost like when the brakes get hot and if you own an explorer you definately know that smell.

Sorry this is so long....please help!!!!

Thanks a bunch ion advance

Dan

Could it have been your fan hitting something, or maybe your a/c compressor clutch was slipping?? (if you were running air or defrost). If you could provide a little more detail about where the sound seemed to be coming from it would help in a diagnosis.

I had the same problem once. It turned out that one of my brake calipers got locked and it smeeled like burning brake pads. I looked at the rotors and they were glowing red. Somebody told me to let it cool and spray some water on it. It never happened again. I was told that some explorers have this problem in stop and go driving. I made the dealer replace the pads and rotors because I think it was the cheap ones that they put in from factory that caused it to lock up. I went through break pads and rotors every 5000 miles until this piont and after that I can go 25000 miles.

Thanks everyone,

First thing I checked was tranny fluid, it definately was not that. No burn smell from their thank god. I had tranny serviced last month filters, new fluid the works.... My mechanic said tranny looked real good.

The sound seemed to come from the front and undrcarriage of the truck.

I asked a dealer they said it could be brakes, possibly timing chain, I think they are all full of sh*t.

Thanks again to the 3 that replied.

alternator?

Did you have the alternator checked? Just before mine went out, it made a lot of whining noise. The bearings were going...

Well, it definitely isn't brakes if the noise continued after you stopped the vehicle. Timing chain is a possibility, but I doubt it would have stopped on it's own. It might have been the power steering pump. If they get low on fluid, or the valve sticks, they can whine something fierce!!

This sounds like the problem I had before! The first time I noticed this sound was when I was applying for the brake to stop in a traffic light. Then after a month there goes that noise again while I'm driving at a speed of 65 mph in a highway then the noise keeps on coming back until I'm really getting worried. Anyway ignoring it makes it worst I think until the noise, while driving in a higway, keeps on going on in a 30 minutes interval. At first I though it will just go away until my reverse does not work at all and I have to push my Explorer out of the driveway just to drive it to the shop. The shop (Ford dealer) said it was the transmission... they replaced it with a new one, thanks God I had my extended warranty. I though my problem was over. From the shop, a mile away that whining sound was still there!!!!! I took it back, they test drive it and the mechanic heard the sound (thanks GOD). The sound is coming from the transfer case. There is a little motor in there. The mechanic does not want to tell me the source of the problem but I think it was not the transmission. . Something about that little motor in the transfer case. But how come my reverse was gone at that time also? Anyway everything was fixed. That is if the sound was like mine. Does the sound pitch goes up and down like operatinfg a blender? Thats how I described the sound I heard on my explorer. Good luck.
