I have a '92 XLT with 142,000 miles that the auto trans. is shot in.(By shot I mean-While nurseing a slipping trans I left in a hurry one morning.Knowing it was slow going in gear I still got on gas hard immediately after shifting into drive. The following BOOM did not sound good.WHOOPS!Now all I have is PARK.)
I did a search for transmissions and was not to thrilled about what I read. This is my first experinces with a 4x and I am hoping not the last.
A friend and I have just about got the trans out so I need to make a decision pretty quick on what to do.I talked to a guy who owns a trans shop ,that was recommended to me by more than one person because of his honesty and good work, and he told me that he did'nt work on this trans anymore. He went on to explain that most of the ones he had rebuilt never lasted even after using all FORD parts. His recommendation was to call Jasper or Ford to check on a rebuilt unit with a decent warranty.I called the local Ford dealership and found a rebuilt unit would cost me around $1400 with a 2 year\24000 mile warranty.I will be completely honest I don't want to have to wrestle this thing out again in 2 YEARS OR LESS!
Are there any questions I should ask the dealership about before I buy.(i.e.Does it have newer upgrades or is it the same as what I have?etc.)
I saw in a post from EXTREME4X4 about the person she gets to do her trans work.Judging by her comments she has great confidence in him and the$1200 price did'nt sound bad either.
I was planning a lift in the near future to accomadate 33x12.50's but I'm a little hesitant now wondering if the trans will hold up.Right now I run 31x10.50's with no lift.
Sorry about the length but I'm a newbie trying to make the right decision.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me,
Brian

Sorry, but this is all the info i got.Dead Link Removed

If you're serious about keeping the Explorer, you might want to look at Level 10 These guys are the best when it comes to rebuilt transmissions.

have fun!!! (been there)

When Ford figures out how to build an automatic tranny and a front end that will stay aligned...they'll rule the world.

...obviously, they're a LONG ways away from this!

I have fought the Ford auto tranny issues in 3 Fords (2 Exploders and one Ranger) for well over 100,000 miles and ten years. I need something more reliable now.

I see other Exploder owners having the same damn problems with their new Ex's that I had in my 1991 and with my 1995, while I see friends getting well over 100,000 miles out of their Pathfinders and 4-Runners with very few troubles. See a pattern there?

Check the NHTSA complaint board on their website: you'll see complaint after complaint on the Explorer automatic tranny...it reads like a broken record...the same problems over and over again...year after year. Ford continues to be fully aware of thier crappy trannies and cares little about making one that will last more than 50-100K miles. Bet on it!

I will not be buying any more Ford products due to the above mentioned problems.

I'd advise you do the same, unless you dig vehicles with slipshod trannies and unaligned front-ends.

...and no resale value, either!
