Well i got a 96 sport with 4x4 and 140,000 on the clock. I am starting to have some strange tranny probs. First of all it seems to slip sometimes when i floor it on the highway. Its not the gears slipping but something else. The tranny will have downshifted properly but the tranny seems to engage slowly and i can gain about 10mph without the tach moving at all. Another weird prob if im on the highway and im coasting the truck lurches back and forth, the tach drops 100-200 rpm over and over while im coasting. Seems like something is engaging and disengaging. And the tranny is starting to shift alot harder in the 1st-2nd gears. What exactly is wrong. how much will it cost, and how much longer will it last?

Getting out crystal ball.....

You ask questions impossible to answer my friend. The lurching back and forth at cruise sounds for all the world like the Torque Convertor clutch locking and unlocking. Unfortunately it is tough to find anyplace that wants to diagnose a trannie, they just want to rebuild it. At 140K though your trannie gave you a decent lifespan life, if this IS the worst.

However. Me ? I'd be curious to know pressures on line and EPC. A valve body rebuild COULD solve your problems and get you another 30 - 50K... then again....have you changed the fluid and filter? dropped the pan ? checked for debris?

Ya the fluid is fine. The mechanic said it smelled alittle burnt, but that it was ok. other than that he didnt say anything else about the tranny, except to bring it to a tranny shop. My truck is only worth 3900 bucks and it already needs 1000 dollars worth of stuff before we even touch the tranny. Im looking at new cars. Please anyone else have any ideas?
