It actually could come firing out, it happened to a 351 windsor in a Pantera I worked on. I didn't leave the socket in there, someone else did that, I was getting something on the electrical back working. When it got chopped up by the rockers in the heads, one of the chuncks came out and broke the head light of a VW bug that was behind it. But a similar thing happened to a 289 HiPo in a 67 Cougar. It went through the block. So I don't really know what could have happened in your case.
