I have my 96 ford ranger with a 4.0 and manuel trans, and 13-54 electric shift transpher case. My problem is that i have no 4 low only 4 hi. My dad decided to take it to the shop to get it fix and after $600 bucks, wich got my a new GEM and shift motor, which didn't fix it i got pissed and told my dad enough. I when to all data and got all the diagrams and bought a new electronic shift module, whcih i thought was broken and that didn't fix it. I checked the switch and all relays, and fuses and they are all fine. I also did a continuity test from the gem down to the shift motor and it all worked. I have no clue what to due now or if there is a way to check the brown wire out of the transpher case or not which seems is the last thing to check. also i can here the relay click when i put it in 4 low.

Please help i'm at the mercy of you knoldge

thanks for any info given.

ok leave the switch on AUTO or 2HI or whatever it is, put the transmission in Neutral, then pull the transfer case motor out but leave electrically connected to the vehicle, now put the key in turn it, then put the switch to 4LO and see if the shift motor has rotated.

if it has, then its definitely not a shift motor problem but rather something with the transfer case itself. I'm not sure about how many degrees 4LO is from 2HI but if i cant remember correctly, I think on the 1354 electric, its about 250 or so degrees?

I've done that and it won't go to four low thats whyim so confused casue orginally i thought it was a shift fork was bent so i tried that and it dodn't work

Thanks for the help the more the merrier cause i have no clue what to due.

The instructions above does not rule out the shift fork. Quite the opposite -- it suggests that this is a mechanical problem internal to the transfer case -- which includes the shift fork.

Let's take a step back for a second, just to cover all the bases. In order to shift into low range, you must be STOPPED, in NEUTRAL with your FOOT ON THE BRAKES (or in your case, with a manual trans, CLUTCH PRESSED IN AND FOOT ON THE BRAKES) then flip the SWITCH to 4 low.

(I have to ask... you'd be surprised how many people forget the 'foot on the brakes' part)

Now, assuming it's not operator error, there are a few other things to look at. Since it's turning from 2high to 4 high, but not into 4low, we can rule out any fuses or relays. I'm also going to assume that you don't get a 4low light when you shift either, falsely indicating low range engagement.

With that in mind, it sounds like there's an input missing from the GEM. First, check the resistances at the switch. Between the GY/R wire and the W/LB wire on the switch, you should have three resistances: 3900 ohms, 1100 ohms, and 360 ohms. Check the Brake On-Off switch for power output to the LG wire coming out of it when the brake pedal is pressed. Then check that the power from the green wire is going into the green wire at the clutch pedal position switch, and out of the CPP switch via the T/LB wire when the clutch pedal is depressed. Next, access the GEM. (Pull the stereo, stereo surround, and you'll see it in the back left corner of the opening.... remove the two (three?) plugs and the screw that holds it in place.) Check for a brake input to the GEM via the LG wire.

Start there and let us know what you find.
