I just picked up a 1988 Ranger 4x2 with a 2.9 V6 and A4LD. It's in good shape, but the transmission is bad. I don't want to spend the money to rebuild it, so I'm hoping to find a used transmission to put in. Does anyone know if a 4x4 trans would work, if I switched tailshaft housings? I can't find any information regarding the length or spline configuration of 4x2 vs. 4x4 output shafts. Also, does anyone know if an A4LD from a different vehicle w/ different engine (Mustang 2.3, Aerostar 3.0, Ranger 4.0, etc.) would work if I just changed bellhousings? Mine is a dual-solenoid valve body. Thank you.

The 4x4 uses a much shorter output shaft in addition to the different extension housing. You cannot use a 4x2 in a 4x4... without removing and changing the output shaft to a 4x4 shaft. That needs a full TEARDOWN. In short no go for a 4x2 - 4x4 swap.

Thanks for the information.

Welcome to this forum! Anything below 88 had only one solenoid in the valve body. The torque converters are different for different applications (3.0L, and 4.0L for example). There are a lot of vehicles that used the A4LD, so it shouldn't be hard to find one. Have you checked out the A4LD rebuild diary, or the valve body rebuild diary? You could probably repair it yourself instead of taking a chance with one from a junk yard. What symptoms are you experiencing? It might not require an entire rebuild.

Another thread that is worthwhile to read is the project Frankentranny rebuild thread. It explains how to make an A4LD better than the factory's specifications by adding parts from a 5R55E. You should also get the ATSG rebuild manual, update manual, and the Ford 3 ring binder.

Thank you for the information & advice.
