I have a 1987 Explorer that I use for a work car. I work constructioin and rely on it to be ready to go , which it is but has some issues.
It doesn't go into forue wheel drive after extensive transmission repairs by a questionable trans man.
The body is starting to rust with rear dog legs gone but looks saveable with panels welded in.
It has 150,000 on it but runs well with its 4.0 engine and the used tranmission out of an Aero Star but still no 4x4.
I'd like to turn it into a duel purpose Work Car / Part Time Off Roader with the running gear I have and make it a reliable ride as well. Point is , I'm not sure as to put the time and money into that old of a car or just drive it as a work car as is till it blows etc ????
I'd still like an off roader to ride National Forest and logging roads in my area but still have the no 4x4 problem to look at. Is it an expensive fix ? Is my Aero Star trans a good choice ? I'm not worried about my 4.0 as it runs well.
Any other tips I'd appreciate.
Thx,
Gonzo
