I have a 1992 Explorer 4x4 that I drive to work . It's a 4.0 engine with an automatic from an Aerostar. It runs well despite the high miles but it doesn't engage in 4 wheel drive.
I'd like to fix the 4 wheel drive problem and go from there to making it a mild off roader still capable of driving to work.
The body has some NorthEastern Ohio rust on it but can be salvaged with some mig welds and panels/patches.
Bottom line is I rely on it for work.
Is the transmission I have a good one or one I'll have to baby ? I had it put in after the original trans dies the third time.
Is the Explorer 4 whell drive unit stout enough to handle off road use or does it need modifications ?
I run standard sized tires on it now and they seem to work fine as far as snow goes. Do I need bigger for off road use ?
I need some experienced Explorer Drivers help here to decide which way to go here.
Thx
