96 Explorer

I replaced my 95 Explorer's transmission. One thing they insisted on was that i get a new PCM as the '95 cannot be reflashed (it's OBD I), I do believe that your '96 has a flashable an OBD II PCM.
The reason is that one of the contributing factors to the original transmission's failure is tolerances on the third gear shift (as I understand it).
A reflash with the latest updated tranny files might help you out.

hey guys i could really use some help. i just lost reverse and overdrive. im no mechanic but i work on betsy myself cause for one im poor and for two i have paid for work on her and i have had to redo myself. so your help and knowledge is invaluable.

More than likely you broke a Band. Trans has to come out and be rebuilt.

There are some good kits on E-bay for this job at a good price. Think I paid around $200 for a super master kit, had everything & included a new Modulator (w/pin).

More fluids, a new T/C, Master kit, and whatever tools you need to do this...... It adds up, and can still be more than you can afford sometimes.

Good Luck!

i was afraid of that. doubt i have the skillset to rebuild let alone tools. may have to get used one. i appreciate the quick reply and knowledge. just changed some vac lines could i have caused this with a weak line? i love my truck and feel like i somehow caused this

Doubtful. The bands are a mechanical strap that glide on the drums inside. They work on tension. There are adjusting bolts that tighten & loosen them on the outside of the trans. Those bolts push on the ends of the bands (U shaped) and there are clips on the ends that break off.

To check to see if this is your problem, drain the fluids, drop the pan, and look in the pan for the broken clip. If not in the pan, take a flashlight & look up in the trans itself.

thanks buddy i will do that. so that clip would it affect overdrive and cause late shifts?

also looking into m50d swap. do you think thats a good idea and how complicated would this process be?

There are bands for diff gears. Clip is what holds the bands in place. Broken clip, no band. Broken band, no gear.

Modulators take a part in shift timing. A bad Mod can result in late shifts and is a simple part to replace. Doubtful the Mod would cause you too lose 2 gears completely.

There can be a host of issues going on inside. Your trans works on Hydro pressure. Solenoids, valve body, electronic sensors, and switches, all have to work in harmony to operate properly.

A pressure test can be done to give you a more accurate diagnose to your issue, but they do not always give you the answer.

It is better to rebuild your trans then install a used trans. You can install a used trans, just to have it break shortly after, and your in the same boat again. Even if you get a 90 day warranty, and it breaks, you are still out time & labor (plus fluids & filter, gaskets) to swap another out.

Manual swap is a cheaper way out, and if you don't mind driving a stick, this is def a good option. There is a great thread on how to do this swap already for your 1st gen. Search the trans section for it. I believe it is a sticky, on top of the 1st page. Read thru it & decide if it is a good option for you.

thanks buddy didnt see the end of your post

Well i went to drive Betsy to the trans shop for a used one and somehow reverse and overdrive worked. wondering if all it needs is a filter change? Or could it be something else
