well, it won't start. i went down a small hill (nothing it couldn't handle that i haven't been on before) and it stalls. drive down the hill without power brakes or steering. get to the bottom and try to crank it. doesn't crank up. there's gas in it, battery is great. also tried reseting the computer to see if it would work. it didn't. when i try to start it, there's the regular noise, but the engine isn't turning over. instead of an oscilating sound when you start an engine, the sound is one pitch. also, when i was trying to crank it before my friend came to tow me back to my house, there was some sort of sound similar to a backfire and somewhere in the engine compartment a little plume of smoke came out. does anyone have any idea why this would happen. could it have anything to do with an oil sensor that's out, that won't let you crank the car because the sensor is saying that there is no oil in the engine even though there is? thanks everyone.

Sounds like you possibly either blew a fuse to the ign. system, or you tripped the fuel safety cutoff. When you first turn the key on, do you hear the fuel pump??

...instead of an oscilating sound when you start an engine, the sound is one pitch....
I could be wrong, but this sounds to me like the starter is spinning, but not engaging the flywheel, and thus, not turning the engine over. Can you verify that the starter is doing it's part to start the engine?

i hear the fuel pump working when i cut the key halfway like it should. i was thinking it might be the starter, with the flywheel not engaging. does anyone know of where some instructions are or something for disassembling the starter? i've got it off the car, but those springs in there scare me. might pop out and never get em back in. thanks for the quick responses so far!

yeah springs scare the **** outa me too.  anyone did you try to arc it? just take a screwdriver put it to the positive side on your celenoid/starter and then take the other half of the screwdriver and put it to the neg side.... worked for me and your problem sounds a little bit similar.. if you do try this and it works you need a new starter/celenoid.

hey, could it be the timing chain for the engine? it's backfiring when i try to crank it up now, so i'm guessing it might be that. tell me if i'm wrong (i usually am). tried to arc the starter with no luck. thanks for all the suggestions and advice everyone!

Notice you have the SOHC engine. How many miles on it? Did you have the 00M12 and 01M01 program work done to the engine?

a little under 92000 miles on it. i haven't had any program work done to my engine. what is that all about? some sort of recall?

oops. no i did have one of the recalls done. after the recall is the extended warranty valid? the recall work was performed around 70000 miles. thanks

01M01 goes to 100K. If the guides/cassettes covered by it blew again and screwed your timing you may be covered.
