'93 XLT 4wd manual tranny
I have a 1993 Explorer XLT with a manual trans
I was recently driving home from work and i pulled out of the parking lot and i pulled on to the road i had to speed up quickly because of traffic and when i shifted into 2nd i felt something pop and now it wont go anywhere if i put it in gear and let up on the clutch the spedo will register speed but im not moving i have a feeling that the trans is shot but if anyone knows excatly what might be wrong it would help

thanks

It sounds like a clutch problem or stripped differential grears. The speedometer is registering some movement, but not enough to make it move. Another possibility is that the gears in the differential may have gotten stripped. The speedometer will show that there is movement because the driveshaft is turning, but the axle won't move since there is no gear engagment in the differential. Did you check underneath to see that the driveshaft is still there? Maybe the U joint broke.

the driveshaft is still there so how to i check if the diff is ok or not

If the speedometer is showing speed and the drive shaft is all there it sounds like the differential or a broken axel. Since you can put it in gear and it won't move try this. Set the parking brake, start the engine and put it in gear. check and see if the drive shaft is turning. If so the problem is in the diff or an axel.

Normally if it's the diff you will hear a lot of grinding noise, a broken axel might not make much noise.

thanks a lot it makes me happy knowing it is probably not the tranny

Man that is a load of fun. Good thing is you can usually find a inexpensive junk yard diff the same as yours and be good as new.

But before i got a new rear end or had it rebuilt i would pull the driveshaft out and put the explorer into gear ( while started) and see if the transfer case is spinning ( if 4x4)

now that you mention it the pop didnt sound like it came from the diff it was near the tranny i remember right

Yeah is this vehicle 4wd? Cauz that adds one more variable.

If you are sure that the transmission is okay, then the problem probably resides in the transfer case.

its has reverse but none of the gears work i didnt try it but all the forwars gears dont work so i was just figuring that it wouldent work either

...btw, update your signature to say 93 xlt 4x4....;)

i didnt try it in 4wd or reverse and it did seem like the pop was around the t case so i guess that is probabaly it but i am at work rite now so i am going to have to check it in the morning

I think ya should try to move it in reverse and if no go just try to see if it would move in 4X4.

Well i had a similar prob and my explorer would only move in 4lo. I messed up the main shaft and it was pulling the front tires in 4lo only.

Try that if ya want.
