New on the site! Hello. I live in Lawrence County, Alabama (Roll Tide!). I have a 2000 Explorer XLS 4x4 with a 4.0 OHV Automatic with 30x9.5 15" BFGoodrich All Terrains.
I'm anxious to get out there and hit some good trails, and will be sifting for ideas about a sensible build. Right now everything works fine - (even the slipping transmission still nets me 19mpg city and hwy)

Problems with it are the aforementioned slipping transmission. It takes a while to shift reverse and reverse slips BAD (if youre trying to back up a grade - forget it) the fwd gears arent so bad, just a hesitant shift from 1st to second while the bands grip it seems. The other problem is in 4wd low - there is alot of binding. Not sure why. the steering pops and you get some banging noises. When Im in 4wd High - no problems what soever.
I know this is the introductory forum - so if a moderator wants to move or copy this post to the proper forum I'd appreciate it. (had to post here first!)

What i really want to do - and I'd like some input - is to get a donor sport - with a manual setup - and use the manny tranny, clutch assmbly, fluid resivoir, ECU, transfer case? and bolt it into my 4 door. Has ANYONE done this? I cant find any info on the net where this has been done. I'm assuming it would be a fairly simple a to a, b to b, changeover.

I have done several motor and transmission replacements - but always been the same thing going back in. I am comfortable with major operations - was just curious if anyone has any HEY WATCH OUT FOR THIS or THAT comments...

I would also like this upgrade to be able to be built upon - I'd like to nickle and dime my xploder into something very trailworthy down the road - step by step.

Any help appreciated! THANKS!

Can we not upload pics here or do they need to be hosted?

Welcome to the site. I'll move this to the transmission forum so it gets better visibility with our tranny guru's.

And yes..unless you're an Elite member, pix must be hosted.

Good move ditching the auto, the t-case is the same so don't bother grabbing another one. Yes it has been done, it's a fairly simple swap.

are there any manual 4 door models out there?? It seems so stupid that the sport had tons of manuals produced, but I've never seen a 4 door version...?

Same thing with my Expeditions.... I've heard rumors of manual tranny Expeditions (and even bench seats!) but have never seen one. Anyone have any info on these mysteries?

Only about 3 years late on this thread! I have a 1996 4 door manual trans. Explorer. Now an expedition with a stick and 4 doors, that would be spectacular! haha I would like to do a 5.0 swap but keep my stick shift and 4x4. But I can't fathom what transmission I would use besides an F-150's.
