Help needed with 93' 4x4 front end..

Hi everyone,
As you can tell, I am new to the forums here, but from what I have read so far, you are all pretty knowledgable of explorers.
I have a 93 that my future father in law gave me today, so I have something to get back and forth to the VA hospital. It has from end problems and I have a basic mechanic skills. With guidence, or instructions, I can fix the problem.

I know I need breaks and rotors because when break is pressed the truck shakes and you can smell the breaks burning up.
Another problem which is the bigest one so far is, when the breaks are pressed I get a loud knock and a ping and then when pushed harder it stops. Also when turns are made I get that clunk.

I was thinking control arm bushing, but not sure. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont have a lot of money to take the truck to a garage due to my only funds are my va compinsation and the occasional pen sale. So any money I could save is great..

..From what you have briefly described, I would suggest checking out your front wheel bearings when you do the brakes...I would also do a search on here for "Radius arm Bushing"...
