2000 explorer 4 litre
 hi everyone. we have a ford explorer 4 litre 2000 reg, which my husband is threatening to take to the scrap yard if we dont find the solution soon!
the truck seems like its not running on all cylinders. him in doors has cleaned the o2 sensors, checked the leads, and the egr vacuum sensor bit has vacuum and the right voltage output. we have just bought a code reader which is bringing up codes p0155, p0113 and p1409, and now we are stumped! ive spent hours and alot of swearing at the computer and we still cant figure out what to do next, please can someone help many thanks

what year is your explorer, a 2000? if you use the search bar on this forum, type in your year explorer and "OBDII codes" or something like that, and posts for the code translations will pop up. i dont know what your codes mean off hand, but from the symptoms you are having with your explorer, it sounds as if you have either bad spark plugs, spark plug wires, or both. you could also have a piston misfire, or have oil leaking into the sparkplug tubes which is causing the spark plug wires to short and the codes to pop up. try testing the spark plug wires with a voltometer. test in ohms. youtube how to test spark plug wires for a good explanation on what you should be looking for (inconsistencies in resistance). change your spark plugs and wires for good measure. look to see if there are signs of oil leaking in your spark plug tubes. if so, you will need to replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube seals. also, there are multiple O2 sensors in explorers depending what year you have. these jobs are tedious, but if you guys can do it yourselves, it wont cost much and you will save literally thousands in labor costs a mechanic would charge you. good luck!

Having done a v quick search on the codes it brings up O2 sensor, AIT sensor and emissions system.

Now you may have to do some investigation. An O2 sensor code doesn't necessarily mean the sensor is shot it could be reading levels outside of an acceptable range.

My first point of call would be to clean out the Idle control valve, Clean the MAF, pull the plugs and check their condition and gap. I would also disconnect and reconnect all the associated sensors to ensure good connections. I would also consider pulling the intake off to check the condition of the rubber o ring gaskets as these can deteriorate and cause very lean condition. Fuel pressure could also be checked if you can lay your hands on a guage. Easy to do as there is a shreider valve on the fuel line near the o/s head.

Basically if you are running lean on both banks you are either not getting enough fuel or you are getting more air in than is being measured by the MAF.

I'm sure there are tests you can do on the maf and they are not uncommon fail points. The IACV is also a common failure point but a clean out with carb cleaner will usually revive them for a time.

All of these things i would try one at a time to source the problem.

Lastly i have read about the cats colapsing and choking the engine but this is an outside chance.

Jan
