1991 explorer xlt
allright i will start by saying that i bought a 1991 explorer and i put an engine out of a 94 ranger in it, i did what you guys said and put my intake on the engine and got it running but it has had some kind of a miss or a backfire on the passenger side and when you try to accelerate while driving it, it is almost impossible to go up hills with it.

When we pull the vacuum hose that runs to the cruise control the engine will idle fine but i tried to cap it off and the car wouldnt even move.

one of my friends seems to think it is a bad valve and it is creating suction and that is what the problem is so what do you guys think?

oh yeah the backfiring is not loud it is just more of a miss or a sputter out of the exhaust.

Update

my friend told me to wait for it to cool of and then start it again to see what it would do and it didnt make the noise until i drove it a couple blocks then it started making the noise but it still feels like it has no throttle, like when you let out on the clutch if you dont give it a bunch of gas then it will kill it when you take off??????????

any ideas guys

Just to get you started:

Compression test???

Vacuum test???

Codes???

Aloha, Mark

check fuel pressure, and any codes in the computer memory

did you confirm the 94 engine worked before you installed it into a 91?

yeah i actually got on here and asked you guys and talked to a mechanic who said change the upper intake and the coolant temp. sensor which i did, as far as codes im not sure yet one of my friends has a shop and he is going to put it on his computer thursday im just trying to get it fixed asap

if the check engine light is on start there, the codes will likely tell you whats wrong, you can pull the codes with a paper clip if you want to.

no check engine light

the check engine light is not on

can you tell me how to check for the codes with a paper clip

you have to search, if the light is not on and its working then its not likely you have codes

for sputtering I would first do a visual inspection, check each plug wire at both ends, then check the fuel pressure

However with a new engine install it could be SO many things.
So when you unplug the vacuum for the cruise control and leave it open to the atmosphere it idles normally or it just improves?

Are you sure you got all the vacuum lines routed properly?
Did you use all new parts with the 94 engine, gaskets, plugs, thermostat, fluids, etc?

Sounds like a fuel pressure or vacuum thing to me.

i dont know if it idles normally really but it does not make the backfire noise when you unhook the vacuum for the cruise control

tho id ad my 2 cents here ive not followed this thread but did the engine u just put in come with 2 oxg sensors from the ranger ?? an now u have the eng in ur 1991 ?? which has just one origenally
