I got a 1991 xlt 5peed 4x4

The transmission started acting up the last month The tranny would'nt go into 1 or R when the truck was stopped only when im rooling to a stop the truck would go into first. I have 2 other parts trucks YES I LIKE EXPLORERS

I removed the transmission from my truck and replaced it with a 92 5 speed
new cluch slave and bearing. i used the original transfer case with the new transmission.

Here is my problem when i move around the shaft from the transfer case (driveshaft disconnected) i feel that the teeh are grinnig inside where the tranny meets the transfer case i pulled it out and messured th outside diameter of both trannys and they are both the same

Question: will the 1992 transmission bolt up to a 1991 transfer case?

what might be causeing the teeh grinnding and not catching the transmission

thanks

I'm somewhat confused but there are no gears in the transmission's tailshaft housing where the transfer case meets the transmission -- so I kind of dont understand the grinding that you're hearing.

As I take it, you swapped another 5speed transmission from a donor truck into your 91 -- using the same transfer case that you had before. Are you sure this new transmission is working okay?

the tail of the tranny has the spindle with teeth (male) the transfercase sounds like it aint catching the spindle?

If the splines (AKA teeth) of the transmission's output shaft is not able to engage the input splines of the transfer case, then the transfer case should not bolt up or mate properly with the transmission. Is that the case?

However, if the transfer case can be bolted up to the transmission w/o any gaps between the transfer case and the tailshaft housing, then the splines have properly engaged each other.

fixed
