Manual Transfer Case help Please!!!!

Hi Everyone,

I’m reaching out to the community for guidance on identifying the correct manual transfer case, linkage, and shifter that would have come factory-installed on my 1992 Ford Explorer.

Here’s some background on my vehicle:

• VIN: 1FMDU34X8NUD81011
• Manufacture Date: 07/1992
• Current Transmission: Manual
• Current Transfer Case: Unverified – trying to identify the exact model. But it is the Electronic Push Button

From what I’ve researched so far, it seems like the Borg Warner 13-54 (BW1354) manual shift transfer case may have been an option for this model. I already know about the electronic-shift version, but my focus is on finding out what manual components would have been stock for my Explorer if it left the factory with a manual transfer case.

Specific Questions:​

1. Transfer Case: What is the correct factory manual transfer case for a 1992 Ford Explorer with a manual transmission? Is it indeed the BW1354, or could there be another option?
2. Linkage and Shifter: What factory linkage and shifter should be used to properly connect a manual transfer case?
3. Cross-Compatibility: If parts are missing or damaged, are there compatible replacements from other Ford models (e.g., Ranger, Bronco II)?

I’m trying to restore the vehicle as close to factory specs as possible, so any tips, diagrams, or personal experiences with a similar project would be greatly appreciated!

It is the BW1354. Only choices were electric or manual shift. Interchangable parts between the Rangers and Explorers.

Yes you need a borg warner 1354m

M is for manual shift
1990-94 explorer, 90-97 ranger, Mazda b series

Some 95-01 and 02-04
Explorers and Explorer sports and Explorer sport trac could also have this case but the front driveshaft changed
Same with 98-04 ranger they can have the correct 1354m case but they have a different front d shaft
It’s best to stick with the ranger donor from 90-97 so your front d shaft will
