i have a 1994 ford explorer, stock. it recently has started to sputter and die when i try to start it, pressing on the gas pedal and trying to give it more gas doesnt help. it doesnt happen all the time. I have been told to change the gas cap, and the fuel filter. If i take off the gas cap alot of air comes out and after doing that and letting it sit for a few minutes it tends to start. I am not a very mechanical girl but i do understand the basics. Can someone please help me ! ! !

Yes I would check fuel filter for fllow, fuel prussure test to make sure that is correct, Maybe check the Mass Air Flow sensor for cleanliness, Just a couple small things to check out. Is there any check engine lights on?

Where are all the washington guys at? We have a Explorer chick in distress!!

I think you have a few things wrong, both fuel related, not sure if they are related other than that. Problem 1 is that you are pressurizing the fuel tank. There is a vapor control system that should be preventing this. I would be looking at the Fuel Vapor Canister Purge Regulator Valve.

Problem 2 is the bad start issue. Fuel pressure testing should lead to a solution there.

thanks
