I changed my tie rods yesterday and on the way home on the freeway my steering started to shake really hard at around 70 i had to slow down to make it stop. I feels like the wheels are not connected to the steering box. I did a search could it be air in the system? and if so How do I get the air out? I did move the wheels back and forth while I was changing the tie rods, I lost some fluid which i replaced. is this the reason why? help!

How did your alignment go?

good they say i need the upper control arms now!

Are the inside of your tires cupped? Here is the scenario I see. Tightened up the connection to the steering box, front shocks could be weak, or if it's 2wd, bearings, upper control arm ball joints toast, and whala, once you get to a certain speed, were the front tires are "oscillating" at a certain frequency, the vibration is transmitted through to the steering box/rack.

Suspension geometry is really a science. Not knowing how they setup your alignment, I couldn't even speculate how severe the out of spec upper ball joints could impact the vehicle. But suffice it to say, "death wobble" certainly is possible with worn upper ball joints.

If you jack up the truck and grab the front tire at the 12 and 6 O'Clock positions, can you move it out and in from those locations? Also watch the lower ball joint when you lift and lower the vehicle, is there any vertical movement in the ball joint? Just did this entire project last weekend, mine were beyond bad, they were dangerous!

Could lower ball joints being bad also cause this? I just changed those too but who knows i might have gotten a bad one I will check it out tonight when i can lift it.

If the steering/rack is moved while the truck is off, the PS system gets air in it.
Start the truck, turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times.
The shuddering/shake will stop.

thanks!

Update

Well I found out it was one of my tires that was a little worn out from having bad ball joints switched it to the back and got all of them balanced and no more shudder or bouncing. My uppers are still bad so I will have to change them but the lowers and the inner and outter tierods did the trick for now.

what do you mean lock to lock? Do you mean with the car running turn the wheel all the way left to right or with the car off lock the steering wheel.

Yes turn it on (running) and turn back and forth
