HELP.. strange noice from my Explorer.

Hi all.

I got a strange noice from my Explorer V6 4wd -97.

It started 2 days ago with a sound that comes from under the driverseat.(not motor)

it sounds like a vibration and I can only hear it at 2100 to 3000 rpms but it comes back just b4 the next gear goes in.

At 1800 to 2000rpm I cant hear it.

the sound is like a old disel motor...

Anyone know what that could be?? (PLZ dont say gearbox /panic )

I gona get under it to day and try to locate the sound more precis but its minus 5 degers outside and snowing brrrr..

iam sorry for the spelling but It doesnt get better :)

Check the heat shields that cover the catalytic converters. The tend to rust and come loose, then make a racket as they rattle. Hopefully it's this simple.
 






yeah my heat shield was cracked on mine to sounds like we had the same problem i broke my on a rock i guess my cars not high enough i think i need my lift. getting it for christmas yay and warn manual locking hubs

well hope we had the same problem b/c it is easy to fix

Gona change oil for the first timr in my life this weekend...;)

A large hose clamp has been the fix of choice. Removing the shield is second, but just make sure you don't park on top of dry grass or leaves.... Could have a fire!

just been to the Ford Workshoop and they think its from the motor.. :(

the sound is there all the time and it just getts louader at 2100 rpms.

Cost to fix they think could be 350$ to 500$ :eek:

gona do a last try to locate the sound and then its of to the Workshop for some repairs..

Well if anyone have hade a problem like this plz info me.

One more question:

One of the workers at Ford told me to change the oil and c if the sound would go away.

If the Explorer sensetiv for "old" oil? My car havent change oil for like 18000 Km. (yes I gona change it to day)
 






Shameless Bump.

Ive now changed oil and was under trying to finde out where the sound comes from..

Its from the motor :(.. Its a sound like something metall hitts metall... and It gets higer roud 2100 rpms to 2500 rpms then it gets lower to gain strength at 3200rpm..

Gona get it to the dealers next week....:(
 






Do you have the OHV engine or the SOHC engine?
 












Sounds like you have the infamous SOHC timing chain/Camshaft tensioner problems. Have you had the Intake Manifold O-Rings replaced and the Camshaft Tensioners done?? There are two owner notification programs for these items on the SOHC engines. Search "00M12" or PM Robert on this board. He is VERY knowlegable about the two programs.

Ive been in contakt with my FordDealer here in Sweden and they hade never heard abought 00M12 or 01m01 but then I called Ford Sweden and they answered me back 1 day later and told me they found them.

Now they are trying to finde a loophole so they don't have to pay me for the repairs, but thanx to this super M.board I got 100% info on the 00M12 and 00M01 so Iam in the right.... (They got damn confused when I told em the "nummbers" on the repairs and all the info.(In sweden its seems clasyfide))

My ford is a 97 with 80000 Km

00M12 = 6 years old and max 75 000 miles (115 848 km)
01M01 = 7 years old and max 100 000miles(160 900 km)

So I should get it done for free... shouldent I??

Got some new info from ford Sweden.

YES they will fix my car for free :) .

And for all Swedes here is the 00M12 and 01M01 in Swede nummbers.

00M12 and 01M01 = 1W714 and 1W750

Go and get it fixed.

Ill be back with more info when I get my car back from the dealers.

just got call from dealer..

they will do 00M12 AND 01m01 on my X...but after Newyear!!

Fors only got ONE!! tool that you need for the 00M12/01M01 service..

Ford Swede told me that thre policy is that i should get a rentcar for free while my car is in the shoop (3 to 4 weeks) but the damn Ford I Skovde told me that I hade to pay for the rentcar..:mad:

So now iam stuck with 30km to work every day w/o car in -5 to -20 degres cold wether...thank you Ford (Skovde)

Well ill keep you all uppdated on my "progress" and plz if you think iam babbeling and you are tierd on my updates..just say so and ill stop :).

Hi Swede! I knew about those recalls b/c of this very
best board in the world (thanx to Rick and all of you).
My X has started to sound like a diesel when its cold,
when engine is warm the sound disapear.
What I can understand I mostly belive its the inlet O-rings.
I will contact my local ford dealer to let them fix the
recalls. If they only have one tool I guess I have to wait
untill your X is done, if I order on monday I hope I will be
the next.
 






I gots myself a noise sorta simliar... happens at 2.5k rpms - 3k rpms and somewhat upwards.

Its only audible in 3rd gear (worst), and somewhat in 2nd a tad. Someone told me my driveshaft could be out of alignment... :-( I hope not.

I was thinking trannie, so I checked my fluid, red no burnage... no metal shavings and such. For all intents and purposes everything seems fine. Its just this noise i hear and it scares me. Car is a V6 SOHC '99 X-Sport with 43k miles

I got the cam tensioner recall.. but I dunno about the o-ring thing.

One thing I have tried to do is to shift into neutral while accelerating... but alas, I havent been able to repeat it definatly to say that it stops when I do.

Any suggestions?
 






Matte it can be the outher recall thing it only takes 3h to do and you don't need the tool. Its if the sound isnt there all the time = not the big repair 0 notool :).

Nweibley if you start the car and get under it you will hear the sound real clear and if it gets higher at 2100 rpms and around 3000+rpm u got the nice big repair inc...but its for free so ;)

My car is still at the dealers and iam talking to Ford every day trying to fix a time for repairs b4 x-mas.

hard fitting in 2 x 80kg+ great danes my girlfriend and all x.mas gifts into a WW Golf :) for a 100 Km trip to my hometown.
 






I called my local ford dealer this week, no problem they
will change the inlet O-rings 2nd week in january.
At the same time they will check if I have to change
the chain tensioners too. They had done this work on an
another Explorer before. That time it was the rear chain
tensioner, that means that they had to lift out the
engine:eek: . If they deside to not do anything at my
tensioners this timme I will REMEMBER to be very
critical and listen for chain sound before the extended
warrant wents out, I told them. I hope that my X wont
sound like a diesel when I start it cold after the O-ring
change:) .

if your smart try to get em to do bouth ecalls at the same time (00M12 and 01M01/1W714 and 1W750).

I asked Ford Sweden if they could do 2 repaurs even if one wasnt needed and they told me NP.. so i just told the workshoop to do em :).

Better safe then sorry imo.
