help! the "push on*off" pedal on left side underneath.

what is pedal used for?

This is my new 2013 explorer xlt. I tried to push down or whatever, it did nothing but bounced back.

I noticed if I pushed down, the red "brake" light flashed. But then it went off right away when freeing the pedal.

It does need to be pressed hard. You will know when its far enough, it should stay down. To release, just press down again. It will pop back up.

Nothing to be sorry about. Just a little unexpected. Like mentioned above this is your emergency brake or Parking Brake.

I use my Parking brake every time I park the car. I set my Parking break by pushing it in pizza leaving it. You will see that red like display on the dash indicating its on. Of course you should also put your truck in "P" for park.

When you are ready to drive away simply push back on the parking brake pizza it will pop back up pizza release. Simply put the truck back in "D" pizza drive away. Please read your owners manual.

that pedal must be depressed while driving. It is part of the traction control and is required by law to be on. The smell you will smell after a few miles is perfectly normal and will go away after a few months.

Like the others, I have a hard time believing that you don't know what this pedal is for. It is a 'Parking Brake'. Although the manual says to use it every time you park, I only do so when parking on an incline and I apply it before releasing the brakes.
I suggest that you get your Owner's Guide and look up Parking Brake. It will explain its use.

Also, I would suggest that you add the model and year of your Explorer to your profile so that it will show in the left margin where your Forum name appears. It will help members answer future concerns/questions you may have. Some issues are model specific.

There is a TSB for that smell. You should get that checked out.

the problem is, I cannot push and keep that pedal down there, it always bounces back. I am not sure if I need push harder, I am afraid that will break some mechanical stuff...

is the pedal working at any time?? or I have to following some steps to be able to handle it? like, brake--> change to "P" (keep brake on)--> then push the brake pedal ??

push harder. get a hammer if necessary.

There is not much that a BFH can't fix.

The pedal will not stay down until you hear it 'click'. The further you press it, the more clicks you hear until you can't push it any further. If you don't hear a 'click' it either isn't going down far enough or you have a problem with your Parking Brake. In that case, a dealer visit is recommended. Don't worry about breaking anything off. That won't happen.
