Was that an option in 98? I am working with a 99 Explorer system. I have plans to disable the light sensor(making it turn on all of the time), and power my automatic lights with an oil pressure switch. Effectively I will have daytime running lights, switchable. Good luck,

If my memory serves, they all come pre-wired for it.... you should need the DRL module plugged in on the frame rail (driver's side, I think??) and possibly the feature enabled in the GEM.

It's been a while since this one came up.... others have done it, but it's rare.

I took the bumper off when I added the DRL module to mine. It made finding and attaching everything much easier.

Here's a picture of the install on my truck, looking up and forward from the driver's side wheel well. The DRL module is the black box on the left, with the fog lamp and temp. sensor connectors to the right of it. The blurred wire in the foreground is part of the fog lamp bracket.

I remembered some more stuff about the install:

- I ordered the bracket that goes with the DRL module, but did not use it.
- The connector was clipped up above where it is in the photo, with the connector pointing down.
- The shorting cap was a PITA to remove, but I was finally able to get it loose by rocking it back and forth slightly while pulling.
- I keep the shorting cap in the truck in case the module ever fails. I can put the cap back, and keep my lights working.
- I atached the DRL module with two sheet metal screws, using existing holes in the body. I had to move it around a bit to find the holes that lined up with those on the box.

That should be about it. Useful threads? :p

You could wire the fogs so they can be turned on any time the key is on. They would work as DRL and the bulbs are easier & cheaper to replace than the headlight bulbs.

The advantage of the true DRLs is that they use the high beam filament running at 70% power. It directs the light into the eyes of oncoming traffic for visibility, but only runs at 70% so as not to blind them.

Fogs just aren't the same... and they don't last as long either.
