Hey guys,

I want to keep this short. I just rebuilt my 5R55W transmission after having a catastrophic failure! I lost all gears, forward and reverse.

Here is what I have performed:

Pulled transmisson, Found paint pen markings on top of transmission that says "Servo" which indicates to me that there has been servo work done in the past.

Broke the transmission down using ATSG's manual step-by-step.

Found NOTHING broken, only found a small piece of "junk" holding the relief valve open inside of the pump.

The last thing I found that was of concern is a check ball in the valve body was worn down to 1/3 its size and lodged itself into the seperator plate which completely blocked off any fluid flow.

Now... The only things that I replace were the following:

- all cluches and steels
- both check balls
- seperator plate gaskets
- gaskets (oil pan, pump seal, rear seal, servo, etc...)

Servo bores look and feel great.

Fast forward... got transmission back in truck and filled to specification with Merc V.

Here's the problems:

1. Transmission is "in gear" at all times in any position including "P". It moves forward in "R" & "N". Drives great in any forward direction with a very strong pull in forward direction.

2. When in "P" the truck lurches forward like being in "D" with the brake applied.

3. I have no reverse at all, it goes forward.

4. I can't shift column lever into "1" at all. Alignment seems fine with all other gears.

I am fairly sure that all clutches and steels are inserted correctly as is the assembly of all the internal parts of the transmisson. Again, I followed the ATSG for assembly.

I have not checked or disassembled the following:

- Reverse Servo
- Solenoid Assembly
- Valve Body

ANY information or suggestions would be great! Thank you very much!

Does that unit have a manual valve like the 5R55E? If so I would check that to be sure it is engaged.

Hmm. I can't recall if I remember seeing that plunger (manual valve) when I disassembled or reassembled. Although I wasn't paying attention either, I was following the book. The book does state "Be sure you engage manual valve" in bold in which I obviously overlooked. That is probably my best shot because I don't remember setting up the manual valve to the selector thing shown in the picture above.

I will let you know, might be a week or so... and thanks!

P.S. Just found out that the ATSG book has a "Manual Shift Control Valve" which looks like that is in the picture above.

Hey guys I am back.

The manual valve waas the problem. Now everything is working... to an extent. Now 2nd kind of slips into gear and 3rd is no where to be found. Got the blinking O/D Off light today with code P0745. I have read about it and can not decifer what it means?

-Is it a bad solenoid block?
-Both servos looked fine and indicated previous work, could it still be a servo?
-Any other suggestions?

Another quick update:

Pulled battery terminal to reset computer thinking that the solenoid may relearn itself.

No such luck, Here is what I did today:

-Dropped pan.
-Removed Solenoid Body and Reverse Servo/Actuator from the valve body.
-Loosened Valve body enough to put manual valve in place.
-Replace Solenoid Body Gasket with new gasket.
-Torqued everything back in place
-Reset Band position in accordance with ATSG manual.
-Filled Transmission, properly

Symptoms:
-Engaging Reverse & Drive from stop has a 5-10 Second Delay
-At full throttle, first to second slips real bad, third is non-existant
-3rd gear is no where to found with a neutral like action.
-Computer has not shown the P0745 code again, yet.
-O/D seem to take a second to get into gear with a slight delay. No slipping when engaged.

So I am hoping its either:

A. Bad solenoid block
B. Bad Servo (Even though they looked fine to me)
C. Valve Body components may need to be removed and inspected
D. Since I did not check clutch clearances when I assembled the transmission (since nothing was found broke inside the transmission originally), the clutch clearance maybe an issue.

Suggestions and inputs are welcome

Pressure Control solenoid A circuit malfunction? Is that the code you have? I don't really know but are all the solenoids replaced at once?

I think the whole block is usually replaced as one unit which includes the 3 solenoids.... I am at a loss on what to do from here.

Can you install a line pressure gauge?

I do nothave access to a line pessure gauge. Although here is what i have found recently.

1. Drove truck fo a few hours today. 3rd is still on the fritz but is now trying to make an appearance. If i grnny drive it then it will slip for a second then go into gear with alot of slipping (maybe band adjustment?). I am fairly confiden that either the intermediate band servo is not working right or I may need to tighten the band a little beyond ATSG specifications. Solenoid body and valve body checked out fine this past weekend.

Did the code P0745 come back this time?

I did get the blinking O/D OFF light about 10 minutes into the drive. I ran into the store, came back out and drove off and it hasn't come back on in the 4 or so hours I was driving.
