HELP transmission problem

I have a 94 explorer xlt it has 189000 miles on it the trans wont shift out of 1st gear.. i replaced the shift solenoid thinking that was the problem but it still wont shift.......

Your transmission won't have a governor that's mentioned in that thread, your issue could be a number of things.

You should start by reading any trouble codes stored in the computer with a scanner, it could be something simple like the VSS sensor or the MLPS switch.

A 94 xlt with an auto tranny does have a governor. The A4LD was used in the 91-94 explorers, and the governor sticking is one of the common issues. It's fairly easy to get to in the tail housing of the transmission, and can be removed with a 10mm socket, if I remember correctly.

Yep looks like they were still using the A4LD in 94, so a sticky governor could very well be the issue.

When you're driving, if you shift to 2nd manually, does it go into 2nd gear? If so, then the governor is very likely the culprit.

ok does auto zone have a scanner i can barrow? and yes when i manually shift to 2nd it goes but when u put it in d it goes back to first gear...... thank you all for the ideas

I figured Ford used the 4R55E trans in 94 when I mentioned the scanner, but it seems all 94's were still the A4LD so you shouldn't need one to figure out why it won't shift.

Check the governor, modulator and vacuum, downshift cable, ect.

Hi,I have xlt-2016, but when on Heat On I stop at red light and give throttle it keep on hard time to shift gears..and rpm goes 3 for all shifts. And Ford service guys says no problem.It seems I am driving 4 cyl car.
Mine XLt is 6 cyl no ecoboost 4 wd

Problem also exist when at traffic ,Heat is OFF and Car drive at 60 then at traffic down to 30 and then without stop give gas...it jerk.
