My '93 4x4 just started an awful winding sound after I start the engine, it get worse as I step on the gas...sounds like Eddy VanHalen and his guitar. Any ideas or thoughts??? Seems to stop after the truck runs for a while?

Slipping belt?
Dunno really - try describing it a bit more - like volume, pitch etc.

repair shops says "alternator" ?? msg

Any thoughts on this? cost? remanufactured or new replacement parts??? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Ah, it's the alternator bearings then?
Nothing wrong with a remanufactured alternator so long as they'll give you a warranty with it. Bearing failure is common, the rest of it will be fine although the brushes do wear out eventually. If you're handy at mechanicals and feeling adventurous you can replace the bearings yourself. On the other hand, you could also take the opportunity to upgrade to a higher output 'nator. Can't help with cost I'm afraid.
